2.4GHz 800FSB w/HT vs. 2.53GHz 533FSB no HT
Currently running a 2.53GHz P4 533FSB. Have a few bucks to spare and noticed the 2.4GHz 800FSB w/ Hyperthreading is under $200 now. How good are these chips and would it be worth it to purchase the 2.4? Anyone using one or have any experience with one?

The 2.4 is a bit faster and has a better performance compared to yours, but if I were you I wouldnt spend my bucks on a small margin of difference between them. The new 800FSB are off course faster and perform better than the other lower, but not a big thing to spend that amount of money. The HT technology is a new thing and I have seen benchmarks that show that Intel processors with the HT off perform better than having it on. Its really a small difference, I currently use a PIII with 1.4 GHZ, and this processor has only 133FSB but for what I do I really dont need more. If you really want a more powerful processor I would suggest to buy a stronger one like the AMD Athlon XP 2800+ which has the same price as the 2.4 that you are currently interested. I have a 2.4c and i love it; make sure you get yourself a good 865 or 875 chipset motherboard with it and some good RAM; 2.4c's are a great value because they overclock like a bat outta hell. Currently at 3.3 ghz from my 2.4; I've hit 3.6 ghz on it, too.
Teh higher fsb on the new pentiums give you a good tangible boost in performance; additionally, all of them currently outperforum even the athlon 3200+

I'm with WingWizard. Ordered my P4 2.4 and mobo last week, and got it all assembled on Thursday. This is a fast and stable platform. Go for it!

I still stick with my believe that you wont see that much of difference if you buy the 2.4 since you already have a great processor. Of course it will increase somewhat but its minimum and its not worth the bucks just for that increase. I must say you have an excellent machine there, and I would recommend you if you really want to see the performance increase get more RAM since you got 512 and you got XP which really loves to eat your memory. Go for 1 GB of RAM and you will see an increase of performance. May I ask what do you use your computer for? Are you a gaming monster? If so the processor change if you are really going to change yours you wont see better results in terms of gaming experience. I would consider RAM upgrade, but you choose, I just believe that spending that amount of money on a new processor isnt worth it since you have an excellent one.

well, if you get your new proc. and mobo, you gotta get new ram too if you're going to overclock. While OCZ's are monsters (that stuff is insane), you're going to at least need some pc3200, although I recommend 3500 or 3700 (ddr 433, 466). OCZ dual channel GOLD is all the rage right now...
oh, and of course, make sure you get 2 sticks to go dual channel  | |

I upgraded from a Pentium III 800eb. I bought the P4 2.4c, the ABIT IS7, and 2 sticks of Corsairs (2 x 256). My total from Newegg was under $400, including shipping. Ordered it on August 21st and got it on Aug 25th.
It was a substantial upgrade for me. I had my P3 for nearly 3 years. Your current system looks really good. Your choice of options is a lot different than mine was.

Well, I decided to go with ordering more ram... I purchased another stick of OCZ 512MB DDR333 Rev. 3.2 from NewEgg. Should see it this week. Thanks for the input everyone.
