Hub vs. switch comparison

I was just about to post the question 'What's the difference between a hub and a switch?'.

I googled it and came up with this site that explained it to some of us non-network guru's.

Hub vs. Switch

SO there is really no thing as a 10/100 hub?

A 10 port 100MBit hub is able to provide (theoreticly) 100 MBits per second spread across ten ports.

If all 10 were in use this would be 10MBits per second per port.

Now due to the nature of hubs, and the massive packet colissions this would create, you will never get near 10x10 or even 1x100.

So yes it does exist, but not in a 10x100 form as that total bandwidth is 1000 MBits per second.

In a switch, virtual circuits are created allowing full duplex transfer speed on EACH circuit. Since a virtual circuit can be created for each port you can acheive 10x100.

Also since switches effectively eliminate packet collisions (each virtual circuit is its own collision domain) you can attain higher speeds, closer to the theoretical.
