College networks keeps disconnecting me.

Hi,

I was just curious if anyone had any thoughts about my situation in my college dorm.

In my room there are to RJ45 jacks and they connect me to the subnet for the 3 rooming halls in the area.

But it seems only my jack makes me disconnect... Not every 5 seconds. Perhaps every 30 to 50 minutes AIM will be disconnected and I can't surf for about 10 seconds until it 'reconnects' (for lack of a better word).

Could I have a bad jack? Or is this just going to be something for me to get used to?

Thanks.

there really is to many factors to say exactly what it is, i would ask around and see if anyone else has the problem.

you might want to talk to the department that is responsible for handling the network

It's interesting because my roommate doesn't have any problem and I haven't come across anyone else who has problems.

I'll have to wonder down to the IT area to ask some questions.

The connections in the jack could be bad, but you should also check you cable, as well as your nic. Also reloading the NIC drivers may help.

Another thing to try is to plug into your roomates jack with his ethernet cable. If you continue to have the problems then you can isolate the problem to your computer. If you do not, then you can isolate it to your jack/media.

I HIGHLY reccomend trying your roomates jack and cable. This will quickly help you isolate the problem as machine or media.

Exactly. Either connect a friends rig up to your drop, or take your PC to their room and connect to their LAN port. Troubleshooting is generally process of elimination. Eliminate the physical layer as a problem. Highly unlikely it's drivers.
