i Think I may have burned it out

Ok, I know my fair share of comp servicing and everything but yesterday I may have messed up royally. Last night I came rushing home from college to install a new crucial stick of 512ddr 2100 ram. The first time I put it in the comp started regularly but the ram didn't show up. So I unplugged the power and flipped the stick around to face the other way. This time the comp flicked on, the monitor didn't receive any signal and i noticed a slight burning tinge or smell.

Heres my system:
Custom built by cyberpowerpc.com
1.57 AMD quantispeed cpu
Shuttle ak35 MOBO
Originally before the *** pc2100 512 ddr
Geforce fx 5600 256ddr
2 hds, 2 cd drives one floppy

Heres what Ive done so far to try it out. Ive replaced the vid card: no effect. Ill attempt to remove the ram or try another slot.

Please reply to this if you know whats going on...Im in desperate need of advice on whether the system is toast or if its just a small fix. And to think that i actually wanted to buy a new case and mobo and strip this pc...right now that couldn't be farther from my to do list than a swift kick to the nether regions

DDR is made to go in one way only, don't know how you managed to stick it in the wrong way.
Remove the RAM and try another stick making sure to install it correctly.

BTW, all though your understandably upset the obscence language does not fly to far at this forum.

Why is it that every kid thinks that the world is his sandbox? First post and potty-mouthed already.

I guess it couldn't have happened to a more "responsible" member, eh?

i have no idea how you can even put the ram in backwards . there are slots in it and it won't go in but 1 way . as for the burnt smell .. u got me on that one . even if you put the ram in backwards i don't see how that would burn anything up . but i could be wrong about that .

Here we go. I just did the following with the following results:

1) Removed old 512 stick and left no ram inside- Bootup light and case light lit for half a second before going off. Small led on the MOBO remained lit and no sound came out of the hd's, cd's or fans

2) Put in new stick of 512-same effect

3) Replaced old stick- same effect

right now I aint feeling too good
