some friends and I were thinking of having a dedecated server in one off our houses so we can challenge each other no matter were we are. now money is not really an isue for the internet since there will be 16 people pitching in.
1. Now what upload/download will we need it will aproximetly be used 7 hours a day and about 50 hours on weekends what bandwith might I need.
2.processor since it will be a server should we go with intel or amd we kinda want the best for the server.
3. operating system our linux guy is on vacation for a while leaving it up to the rest of us to figure out should we use linux or windows something. we mostly run xp on our personal computers but don't know if linux servers will work with xp computers.
we want it to be able to support the majority of the games including half life 2. thanks for the help.

Who has the fastest internet connection out of you guys?

I have a W2K server at home running on an Intel D845BG motherboard with a 1.6GHz P4 (single CPU) and 512MB of RAM. I have a fast cable connection. I run a Quake3 UT server once and a while. I've had up to 15 clients playing at the same time without lag. You could get to my server from Game Spy. You can run your game server from an XP machine. It doesn't have to be an actual server.

I'd say, if you want support for a good-large sized server for all the latest games, a P4/2ghz or Athlon 2000+ would do you, buy whatever you can afford. I'd reccomend Linux for the OS, if its going to be a dedicated server, but as meese says, you could run it from any OS, even Windows 98 or something. The reason I say Linux is that its easy to strap on extra services, and should you want to remove something, its unlikely to break the system.
As to the internet connection, if you can get cable/broadband at like 1mb, you will be set for more than 20 players.
512-1024mb DDR should do you ok as well, if you go for Linux.
I'd reccomend a good motherboard more than much else though, as thats the bit linking everything together, and will be (besides the CPU, RAM and Network) a large factor in the performance.

One big question: How many servers (games) are you planning on running at once? I mean, a 32 player CS match will run on a PIII 1ghz or probably less. What are you expecting from the server?
If you only want one game at once, then you could get away with much less than running 5 independant servers on different ports.
Also, is the server going to be doing other stuff, like a website, FTP, fileserver? As these will affect your choice (software more than hardware though) in what to use.

currently we all have basic cable/dsl and are planning on bringing in another line to one off our houses. Our only isp are sasktel and shaw, sasktel being dsl and shaw being cable. we plan on running one game at a time for a week or so then change it and we are just using it as a gamming server.

If you can get cable then go with that. I know from experience Bell in Ontario isn't that great for DSL speeds in my experience anyway. I don't know about Saskatchewan though.

A slightly different approach it running a server... lease one with good bandwidth that you also have total control over, something like http://www.wickedservers.com/servers...next=dedicated
