What is the best chip i could put in my socket 370 mobo

I have a ASUS cuv266 mobo with a celery 1 gig in it. I have been seriously considering upgrading but its so fricken expensive to replace most everything and mine works ok really. Is there a chip i could get that is good for this board ? anyone know? Like a higher gig p3 or something. Are they good for gaming?

try reading the manual for clues as to how fast a chip you could wedge in there. sometimes the support page on the mobo makers website will tell you what they have run in the board.

Tualatins are good chips, but IMO they are not worth the cash they ask for them.

An option would be a Tualatin Celly 1.4Ghz, comes with 100Mhz bus and 256Kb cache, they are pretty nifty chips, and can be had at low prices.

Just be sure to check whether yer mobo supports them.

Here is the goss' on celeron support, direct from Asus:

" Does CUV266 support Celeron 1200 processor?

Due to Celeron 1200MHz uses Tualatin core and not Coppermine core, our CUV266 cannot support it. "

The highest are 1100mhz coppermine celeron and 1000mhz P3.

Well, there is the option of using an adapter which makes a tualitan work with a non tualitan board.

The tualitans rock..in other words a tualitan celly at 1.2ghz or whatever is better than a non tualitan P3 at 1ghz or 1.2ghz etc.

They used to have it at compgeeks but I dont see it right now.

The tualitans cellys are dirt cheap compared to the overpriced P3 stuff.

This article should give you an idea. It doesn't include the Barton 2500+ which would sit above the 2600+ (Games for eg.) for some tasks and below the 2400+ (video rendering for eg.) for others.

The Athlon 2500+ is around 2.5 times faster than a p3 1000mhz.
If you're a gamer tho', don't think that it'll get 2.5x the framerate. Probably more like 1.5x depending on the videocard.
