Kids Home Networking >>?

unfortunately, i know nothing about networking, and how to share internet connections. i know what a router, a network hub, and ofcourse, the internet service provider.

my real question is, how can i set up my two computers to either "network" together, here side by side; simply share an internet connection!

computer 1) (WIN XP - 901AMD // 256mbRam) and Mandrake 9.1
computer 2) (WIN XP - 930iP3 // 128mbRam) and Redhat 9.0

both with TWO Network Cards.

ONe Toshiba Cable Modem<<<<

do i really need a router to connect them together?
can i just simply connect them together via their network cards?
plz explain and i dont want to "spend" any more money!

If you want to connect them together with just the cards and cable you'll have to buy (or make, if you have the resource and know-how) what's called a crossover cable. It's the exact same type of cable used with regular (called straight-through) network cables, they're just wired differently at the ends.

Connect one system to the modem and link it to the other with the crossover cable...then "bridge" the connections on the "server" computer (done from the Network Connections)

a broadband router would be your easiest bet if you used a crossover cable you would have to have 2 network cards in one computer one for the modem and one for the crossover cable going to the other system.

Well he already has 2 NICs in each computer, so thats not really an issue. In fact all he would need is 2 in the server PC.

Goto a local comp store and pick yourself up a crossover cable long enough to go between the 2 comps. If its windows... you can easily just enable ICS, but I'm not sure how to share the connection with linux...

use something like WinGate.

You install it and the PC with the connection, and also on the other PCs on the network, the other PCs look to the main one for their net connetion.

Internet conection software. ICS.

You need two NICs in the main PC but yo uhave that.
