Can anyone recommend an unzip utility that works in DOS and how I would make it work?

Yes, pkunzip is (was) THE zip/unzip utility for DOS.
www.pkware.com
They have the DOS version up for free download, I believe, if not, google it and you'll find it easily enough.
You normally use it by typing:
Code:
pkunip zipfile.zip
to extract into the current directory.
