Approximate speed of a 1999 Gateway?
Trying to assist a cousin who has an older Gateway machine. Purchased in Oct. 1999, and I need to know the general speed of the system. It runs Win98SE and thats about all she can find. I don't have a clue about the speed of the chip, but is probably Intel..nor the amount of RAM onboard..probably a basic setup.
Anybody familiar with Gateway machines from this era?
Thanks

Hmm, Id guess a P2ish
Tell her to run "DXDIAG" and it should tell her the speed or at least the cpu.
Or better yet. She can probably just get the serial number off the tag on (probably) the back of the machine and then go to gateways site and look up most all of the info.

You could have her go to System Properties and it should tell you the processor and amount of ram.

1996-1998 was the main market pinnacle of PII, so if she bought a 3/4 1999 thats probably an early PIII, so i would guess anywhere between 600-800, and 800 would be stretching it.
sometimes RIGHT clicking on My computer -> Properties will tell at least the CPU type, and if it's your birthday, the CPU speed.

Prolly all depends what she paid for it too, theres also the posibilty that theres a cellery processor in there. Maybe 128MB of RAM... i suppose if it was a really cheap CPU 64MB.

Hey!!..thanks for the fast responses. I forgot all about dxdiag..and have written her to try that..but if memory serves me, that doesn't do anything for the DirectX that comes with Windows. I think I tried it one time to see what version I had, and got a screen saying not found, or something simular...as soon as I D/L and installed ver 8.0, I could get that screen. I just sent her an email with a screen shot and asked her to try it.
Like many newcomers to computers/internet etc. she is a little leary of trying things...and I don't want to confuse her. Its not that important anyway..and its probably in the sub 1ghz range, just after socket 7 systems left the scene

Just check system properties... it will tell you the Ghz of the processor. You don't need to install DX8 if she doesn't need to use it.
Anyway, it should be an early PIII for Oct. 1999.
