Question about Windows Explorer

I'm running Win XP and I don't like the way Windows Explorer comes up pointing to My Documents as default..

I remember back when I was running Win 98 if I opened Windows Explorer it automatically opened to the "C:" drive and had the list of folders on the left and I could browse to whatever I wanted.

Now I have to click the "+" by My Computer then the "+" by C Drive to see the contents...

Does anyboby know how to get Explorer to open the "C" drive by default? This has been bugging me for some time now.

Thanks

Jim

Right click on the icon for explorer, choose properties and change to:

C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /root,

and it will open to c:

Don't miss the comma.

Thanks shahani but that opens up the C drive in a seperate window with out the listings on the left hand side for C drive and D drive etc.

I was loking for something similar to my attached pic. But instead of starting in the My Docs it started in the "C" drive.

I've tried some other switches I got off the MS site but nothing works to my liking.

I just wonder if this is impossible

Open regedit:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

On the right you will find Personal. Double click on it and put the address to any drive or folder you wish to see in Windows Explorer when you open it.

EG
I have all my personal files on drive X:\ so that was the data I input

The address will still have My Documents listed but the contents will change to the new address.

Since I have multiple partitions I also moved my Cache, Favorites, Temporary Internet Files, and My Pictures folders addressing.

I did this with each of my O/S's all addressing to the same folders on FAT32 partitions.

Cheers!

A side note

This works with the shortcut to "Windows Explorer".

When you go to save a file from a program you will also be greeted with the new addressing. I do this on many multiple partitioned computers so that files will be saved to a personal drive instead of the O/S drive. Less fragging, and less cluttering of the O/S drive.

Cheers!

Thanks Beemer I'll try that out when I'm a little more sober. Hopefully I'll get that to work.

Cheers and "Clink" to you.

Why wait to be a little more sober?

Here's me going through all 27,000 entries in regedit on a win98 system trying to get to know one another about 3 or 4 years ago.

The proper way to perform this daunting task is to have Frank Zappa cranked way up, and a bottle of crown. Place cutting board in your lap for the keyboard after you sit back in the lazy boy.

Open regedit, pour a drink, click one time on My Computer, hit the astrix key on your numeric key pad.

Start opening keys.

Cheers!

PS: This process is not for the faint of heart. I don't suggest anyone but the crazies to try this.

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,C:\
Add the bolded section, noting the spaces and lack of spaces between switches.
For D:, just replace "C:\" with "D:\" etc.

why go through the registry when you dont have to in XP???

in the windows directory there are 2 shortcuts for "explorer" just make a shortcut for the one with the yellow folder icon on your desktop. simple as that. thats the one you want.

hey beemer, great pic. do a shot with me?
