If i write a web page in HTML, and put in my e-mail address, is there any way to test if it is working, before i launch the page on the web.
Thanks in advance

a mailto: link will ONLY work if the page viewer uses an email application on their computer such as Outlook ... which most users don't use.

So the only way is for people to copy and paste, or type my
e-mail address into what ever they use for e-mail?

As usual I think Telexen has no idea what he's talking about. Most users do indeed use a mail application. But it would be smart to have your link also display your email address so those that need to can copy 'n paste it.

If your hand writing the page, save it as an .htm or .html document. Then go to where you saved it and double click on it. The page will appear and all will work as you have coded it or won't if you botched the code.
If you used an html editor, you should have in your toolbar and under "File" some command that will view your page in your web browser.
Cheers!

well some don't use an e-mail application.... a lot of people use web based e-mail (like hotmail or yahoo)
so it's a good idea to have the user see the full e-mail address, so they can copy and paste on their web-based e-mail composer.
another way would be to have an e-mail form and send the message to your e-mail.... but that's out of the question i guess.

If you post a link to your email address on a publicly available website, be ready for spam and virus messages to bombard your inbox. If you need to have a way for folks to send you mail or info, consider a form with a text box. Sort of like the "Your Reply" box at the bottom of this thread.
Otherwise, just post your email address w/o making it a link. It's harder for bots to harvest that way.

My suggestion is to create a formmailer so you don't have to worry about them getting your e-mail, you might get lucky and get theirs if they fill in the text field .
If you do not know what a formmailer is nor know how to make one, I can help you out if you're interested. Send me a pm or something. It's up to you!
And to your question, yes there is a way to check if it's working. All you need to do is open up the .html document on your harddrive and see if anything happens when you click your e-mail. You should get the same result as if the .html document was on a web server.

I can think of about 40 people just off hand, either friends, family, or clients, and they ALL use some type of email client that would indeed work with a mailto link.

specially college students who don't have computers, and spend most of their time on a computer lab.
there's a lot of people like that. |
