By lock ups do you mean the system hangs or do you get a BSOD error?

You might want to check your RAM, as that is always a prime candidate for system freezes and so many other errors. Try memtest86. DocMemory also works but it doesn't catch as many problems.

Also, another thing to see is if your computer is overheating. Did you OC anything? Check your temperatures.

Could be the power supply. 250 watts is not a lot nodays. the board and processor pulls a lot. try changing out if you can.

here what I found. i started from zero. i formated my hard drive and then

1. install win98

2. install asus probe to watch the memory 28% used

3. The video card driver 128 mb (memory 30% used)

4. all the stuff on the a7v8x-x cd (memory 49 to 50 % used) except the VIA chip set driver. ( guess what no lock ups)

5. install roxio 6 and that took a lot of memory from 57% to 85%

and now everything is runing good except the VIA driver .... let me know if there is a new via driver for my mb

thanks...
P.S
I miss the days of my 100mhz pc w/ intel chip mmx and my 256 ram

http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2 is where you'll find Via chipset drivers. Get the Hyperion 4in1 drivers.

dear chiguy
the page you send me it has this
" Users with hybrid chipsets (with a VIA southbridge and AMD northbridge for example) should obtain drivers from their motherboard manufacturer."...

i have amd 2200 and A7V8X-X with VIA KT400 & VIA VT8235 where VT8235 South Bridge, and kt 400 North Bridge

http://www.via.com.tw/en/apollo/kt400.jsp

thanks anyway

It is ok to use those drivers if both the northbridge and southbridge are made by Via. My old board had that (KT333 and some Via southbridge that I don't remember) and I never had problems using those drivers.

Systems

Well,
guess what I installed the VIA 4 in 1 driver and my computer crashed . the message was " problem in cpu windows will do a safe shutdown..... " no more VIA for me ( no i am not running WIN XP) then i took everythuing off and reinstall it i am ruuning know fine with a momery used total of 75%.....

I like to ask about power supply... what you guys think about that. aslo if the current rating is higher for the mobo can that cause any problem,,,,,
