CD and DVD Drives will not read all CD's

Hi,

I have got a really strange problem with a machine here at work.

The machine has a DVD Rom and a CD Burner in it. The OS is Win 2000.

The Drives will read any Audio CD be it a factory one or a CDR, Media Player opens and away it goes, no problem.

Neither Drive will read any other sort of CD. I have tried a few other auto run CD'S such as NAV and a copy of Win 98 that we have here and nothing happens. DVD'S don't start up but no one is sure that a DVD has evere been played on this machine so this might not be a part of the problem.

When I try to access the CD and DVD Drives via My Comp and clicking on the icon for the drive I get the message Please insert a Disk into Drive xx:

If anyone can enlighten me as to what is causing this I would be very appreciative.

Cheers

There could be some systemtray audiocd app running that is locking the drive into belief there's audiocd in it.

The only thing of those that I can think could cause the problem is incd (ahead packet writing software).

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. That program starts when a CD is put into he drive.

As stated above this machine is running Win 2k Pro It has also SP4 installed in case this rings any bells to anyone.

If the Command.com is run I can see what is on the CD's no problem. I can exchange CD's and see the dir for each one.

If the machine is rebooted with CD's(not music CD's) in the drives you can run them as normal through Explorer. If you open and close the drawer then you just get the same as in my initial post about there being no disk in the drive. Insert a music CD and away it goes.

It has been suggested by a workmate that this could be either a result of SP4 being installed(no one is really sure if it worked after SP3 either) or a Virus affecting the way the OS handles the different type of media.

Thanks

Hi,

There has been a resolution found for this problem.

It would appear that SP3 and SP4 were both installed while the AVG Software was running. Uninstalling the AVG Software has solved the issue and it now reads all CD's/DVD's etc and burns CD's just fine.

Cheers
