MSN Messenger 6.0 problems
Have a new computer I have setup. I am running Windows XP with SP-1 and all the updated patches.
I cannot get Windows Messenger to start. I start the program, and it does not start.
I have installed MSN messenger 5.0, and it works fine. I install MSN messenger 6.0, and it installs, tries to start, and then exits. I cannot start up MSN messenger 6.0 after this. I can remove 6.0, and reinstall 5.0, and it works fine.
Any ideas? Have not been able to find this with goggle and many other searches.
Thanks!

There are quite a few versions of msn messenger. Make sure the one you have is XP compatible. If you downloaded the 9x setup its not particularly surprising that it doesnt work. Try downloading the XP version and installing that.

Thanks. I don’t think that is the problem however. I am running MSN messenger 5.0 for XP, and it works fine. I install MSN messenger 6.0, which the Microsoft home pager says will work with XP, and it does not work and has the behavior I explain above. Here is a link to the Microsoft download page for this software: Microsoft MSN messenger download
Any other ideas?

MSN Messenger Shuts Down
I'm having the same problem with MSN Messenger 6.1 Beta with WINXP. It was downloaded several weeks ago, and working fine. Last night for some reason when I tried to start the program, it logged in but automatically shut itself down. I tried reinstalling MSN 6.0 which had worked fine, but it was now doing the same thing. I tried running Windows messenger, which a ran a few days ago, but now it won't even start. I click the icon, and nothing happens.
I ran system restore, but the same thing is happening. Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening, or what to do about it. This is just a wild guess, but whatever the presets were for MSN messenger are being saved even when I reinstall. Does anyone have any idea how to get rid of them so that I can do a fresh reinstall?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Soma

There seems to be a rash of problems popping up on 6.0.
I had to uninstall it from the neighbors comp and reinstall the older version.
I don't use it and completely removed it from my computers.

Messenger
The 3 most common issues with messenger (Windows or MSN) are:
1. The program is set to run minimized, and the messenger options do not permit the program to run in the background.
2. The messenger is set to sign in automatically, but uses a diff passport address than the XP profile.
3. Messenger is not able to use the registry to save passport information, or the passport information saved in Windows XP user profile settings in the registry is corrupted.
As a simple fix (or workaround), you can always create a new Windows XP user, and this should allow you to use the Messenger.

I don't use Messenger (don't know anyone who uses it) but I think creating a new profile to run the program would be a bit of overkill.
Couldn't you just delete the settings for your existing profile and then reconfigure it? I know that can be a lot of work but it sure beats creating a new profile.

Depends if the registry is just wrong, or if it's corrupted. You can also do this to change the passport:
Control Panel > User Accounts
In user accts, click on manage network passwords...
delete the passport accts out of the list
(MSN or Hotmail addresses)
when you open messenger again, it will ask you to set up your passport.
