Pop in a dvd and see (listen) to what happens.

WindowsXP will convert the audio to Digital audio, therefore, no CD Cable is needed, if this option is disabled, in the properties option box in the Verbatim dvd burner properties, then you will need a cable for it.
If you use Win9X, you will need one.

Uh, the audio is digital on the dvd. The analog cable was necessary in the old days, but not anymore since digital extraction works fine.

Just to clarify: digital playback through the IDE cable is hardware dependant, not OS dependant. It will work in Win9X if your CD-ROM/DVD device supports DAE. It works the same way as ripping a CD except that it streams the data to the inputs of the soundcard rather than saving it to disk.

The benefit is that the digital signal is converted to analog by the soundcards DAC, not by the (usually cheap and crappy) DAC in the CD-ROM/DVD device, resulting in better sound.

I guess i could take the cd cable off my dvd rom as well to reduce clutter, since i am running xp home or it should support DAE

Yup, you could. Playback through the IDE cable/DAE method does use a bit more CPU than the audio cable method though so you may want to switch back if DVD playback becomes too choppy. It depends on your hardware whether this would really be an issue. You can measure your devices DAE quality/CPU load with Nero's CD Speed to get a rough idea.
