Kids RoadRunner giving me the run around?

Ok, about 2 weeks ago I was running at a comfertable 240-250KB/s. But within the last 2 weeks mainly last week my internet connection has dropped down to AT BEST 180-200KB/s. It's been as slow as 130KB/s. So I call them up and they send out 2 service techs. They start typing in all this stuff on my computer and decided to replace the 3COM Surfboard with a Toshiba 2500. Well, that didn't speed anything up much. So they go out to the cable box and do some work out there and get it running to what "they" call Road Runners "Home users" gauranteed speed. Still the same..... They pinged a bunch of sites etc. etc. and said that RoadRunner was running fine. Well I have 3 pc's running off a router ( LinkSys 4 port). I have tried connecting all 3 seperatly to the modem by itself and all three still run the same. So I eliminated the router problem. I haven't done any tweaks either. One I did a complete new OS install and it still crawls... compaired to what I was running at. Anyway, they tell me I am at there rated speed for "Home Users". Now I was told when I first had this installed that my rated speed was 2048kbps down and 384KB/s up. What's up? I go to DSLREPORTS.com and do the tweak test and all 3 computers show good data stream and "NO PROBLEMS" but they are just well below the 250KB/s I was getting just about a week 1/2 ago.....

Be careful how you use KB/s and kbps. They're not the same. Just FYI.

Keep in mind that many networks have been flooded over the past two weeks with the MSBLAST and Sobig problems. Everyone's network is feeling the slowdown. Probably not a permanent thing.

Jgedeon 35ms (but it has timed out before also) It's up and down... lately... down....

M_Six According to RoadRunner I was told 2048 kbps down and 384 KB/s up was the home users bandwidth rated speed. Now isn't 2048 kbps close to 250KB/s? From my calculations it comes close. I believe 256KB/s.

I hope it's just temporary..... with all this virus crap going around......

Have you noticed any certian times that it goes down? 35ms is great for RR. When it gets to the 40's there there is a slow up. Need to start watching the slow ups and then doing a tracert to see were the slow up is. Another thing to try when it gets slow is a simple reset fo the modem. After you have reset the modem and your pings are still above 40ms get on thhe phone with them. The ICMP pings going on on the RR network. This will also slow things down on your end too.

I just ran a trace route to www. roadrunner.com and at line 18 I was at a 134ms ping and 19-30 all timed out. I also pinged www. google.com and got a 67ms ping.

Driving me nuts!!!!!!!

your tracert showed you where your slow up was. With a ping time of 67 to google I would have been on the phone then to RR help desk just to keep a fire under their butt. Thats is too high for residentual service. Did they ever run a new drop?

Not exactly sure how they did there drop, but they ran a new line from a splitter on one of the telephone poles down to my box. They never buried it so I had to run it along the fence line to get it out of my back yard.

Also, I've called them several times about the up and down ping times that I get and all they do is come out and run a few ping tests to certain sites and if they show under 40 then they say it's ok... They told me when they were here they could not find anything wrong and that (they did a test at bandwidthplace.com) and it came up 204.5 kilobytes per second (while they were here) so they said looks good to me and left. Yesterday it was so bad I was running around 128KB/s download speeds. 1/4 of the time half my sites I was trying to get to wouldn't load so I gave up. I've reset the modem, router, etc. Still same results. I tried the computer that just had a clean OS install 'XP PRO' and I tried to download MSN Messenger and I was getting a 78KB/s download speed. This was at 8pm. So yeah, I'm a bit upset but they don't seem to care.

hey sweeper, I'm having simiiar issues here for about a month (RR in SW Ohio too). They changed my cable line and my modem but no luck yet. I play an online game (too much) and the packet loss is a very big pain!

btw, my one of first the major RR routers I hit is in Covington, Ky. Yours may be the same.

Glad to hear I am not the only one in the area with this problem.... still drives me nuts though......

I just talked with my brother who has RR. He called complaining about his online gaming. He said he was experiencing some serious lag. I told him to run a check on his line and he was as slow as 680kbps at the time. I checked mine and I was at 1.4 mbps. So he has a call into them also....
