Kids Thermal Grease

On my current P III, running at 800 mhz, I only have the thermal pad, and it's working fine. My idle temp is always around 39C.

I recently bought an new mobo (ABIT IS7) and a P4 2.4c ghz. I also have some thermal grease (ANTEC) and will be using Intel's stock heat-sink and fan. My room is comfortably cool in the summer, I have a nice ceiling fan.

My question: I always see the phrase, "Apply the thermal grease on the core of the cpu". Since this will be my 1st attempt at this, I would like clarification. Approximately how much? I would also assume that the core, means the center area of the cpu, and not the entire surface. Do you apply a thin layer of the grease, and make sure it's spread out evenly, or do you add a dab of it to the core center and then apply the heat-sink so it will spread out? Finally, is it better to apply the grease to the heat-sink, the cpu, or both?

Sorry for the detail, but I'm a professional model builder, and have always paid close attention to the application of glue. Too much, you have a mess. Too little, and it doesn't work. I put myself in the hands of those who have experience

Thanking all in advance,

Robert

I would 'paint' the surface of the CPU with just enough grease so that you have a nearly opaque layer. Better to have a bit too much than not enough. Any extra that oozes out will not cause a problem. (Be careful, it gets everywhere.)

Thanks Quidam. It sounds like you mean the whole surface of the cpu. Do you use a brush? I forgot to ask about that. I was going to use a thin piece of flat plastic.
