Windows Media Player 9.0 Clear Recent Documents

Is there a way to clear the list under file/open/most recent documents in wmp 9.0 without editing the registry?

Yeah, create a .reg file to do it

Ok, that edits the registry anyway but so what. Why don't you want to edit registry?

Nope, deleting the file will not remove the shortcut from the program.

Editing registry is easy, though you can go horribly wrong and make your whole computer unbootable/unstable, but then again, you can do that by messing with device manager etc. too.

A .reg file looks like this (this will remove the entire recent files subfolder from wmp6.4)

//start file
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\P layer\RecentURLList]

//end file
Just create a file like that in notepad, save it as <whatever>.reg and doubleclick it.
Doublecheck the path of the key though, as using - in reg file will truely remove stuff, so if you put -HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE you might remove the entire HKLM path.

//edit: There aren't supposed to be any spaces between the [] brackets.

For help, see one file that appears in the recent list of wmp9 and search for that string in registry, then click edit and 'copy key name', follow the example of my file or wait for someone with wmp9 to provide the full path.

You'll have to download and install the Windows Media Player Bonus Pack from Microsoft. There are multiple versions, so be sure to download the correct version for your player. Here are the options you need to select to make sure you get the right one:

Select download: Windows Media Player Bonus Pack
Select version: Choose the Bonus Pack for XP or version 7.1 running on Windows 98 or Me.
Select language: This one's self-explanatory.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...ad/default.asp

The Bonus Pack doesn't just erase the history automatically. Once you've downloaded and installed it, follow these steps to clear your Most Recently Used Files list.

Windows 98/Me

In your Start menu click Programs, Windows Media Player Bonus Pack, and then Windows Media Player MRU Cleaner.
It will ask you if you want to clear the list. Click Yes and you're done.

Windows XP

The MRU list is cleared through an add-on application called the MPXP Tray Control.

From your Start menu click Programs, Windows Media Player Bonus Pack, and then WMP Bonus Pack Tray Control. The Tray Control icon will appear in your system tray in the lower right corner of your screen.
Right-click the icon and it will give you the option to clear the MRU list. You'll also be able to turn it off so Media Player will stop keeping track of the files you play.
