Moving a Dell MoBo into a generic case...

Does anyone know if I can put my Dell Dimension 4550's mobo into a generic ATX case? Or will the mobo be proprietary?

Mobo will fit in case but the mobo and PSU on the Dells are usually proprietary, both wired differant from standard ATX parts.

If you put the mobo in the generic case youll have to use the dell PSU as well or purchase a PSU wired special for a Dell mobo, they do make these. People other than Dell, that is.

How old is this PC? My cousin's Dell which is 4 months old or so had a standard ATX power supply. Go to www.formfactors.org and download the ATX12V POWER SUPPLY DESIGN GUIDE. Go to page 29 and it shows the pinouts for a standard ATX power supply. Compare this to your Dell power supply and motherboard power plug.

The PC is not that old at all... it's a Dell 4550 with a P4 2.4 gighz.

Systems

My new Dell 400SC does not use one of Dell's proprietary power supplies. But the mobo in it is NOT ATX standard in size or location of mounting holes. Check carefully before jumping.
