Outdoors Slow to delete/paste files...very slow.

Howdy all

I have got a major problem, and the anger levels are going up in a similar, major fashion.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When I delete, copy/paste and to a lesser extent cut/paste, my computer takes roughly two milleniums to complete this operation. This does not happen all of the time, and I have found no consistent circumstance present when it does. I have XP Pro with PentIII/1000mhz/512RAM. When I paste or delete something reasonably big (10-20mb +) it will literally take 2 or 3 minutes to finish. The little (and increasingly annoying) box with the progress bar just SITS THERE!!! for a damn long time. When something smaller becomes the focus (say I delete 10 files; 1 x 5mb, 9 x tiny), the smaller file's names will flash by, then will slow down again when it hits the big file. Sometimes it will just do it in a flash (thank christ you hear me say at the time) but if bigger files are involved usually not. This has not always been case, only in the last 3 or 4 months. There can be no programs, and a seemingly normal number of processes, running, & it will still do it. I have defragged (forgive if this makes no difference); I have yet to find good help on the status of the 'page file'(?) and what this should be set to, I just can't understand how I can have this problem all of a sudden. I have up-to-date AV software and have scanned with current Ad-aware ref file.

Any ideas??

Again, I very much appreciate any assistance that can be given.

Cheers, Nathan

Here for the correct VM values :

http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

Now for your delete problem. Do you press the Shift key while deleting to bypass the Recycle bin ?
Maybe is your Bin corrupted/full. You can delete the \Recycled Folder, it will be recreated during the next reboot.
Don't know for the paste problem.
Actually, I don't use Explorer anymore because it LIES about folder contents. You can use winfile (the old win3.1 file manager), it will help you to delete or drag and drop files and navigate between the hidden folders because Explorer will not show you the reality of the disk.

I use Total Commander, the best file manager ever, used by MS in Redmond. http://www.ghisler.com

Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the VM link, that looks helpful.

It doesn't matter whether I push shift to bypass or not, and the exact same thing happens when pasting, so it's something to do with 'processing' large files.

Hi Nathan. Do you have SP1 ? I know SP1 has brought some problem with users. A hotfix could also be the culprit but it's very difficult to trace.
Does Explorer take 100 CPU during the delete/paste ?
Did you try without other programs running ? I mean without anti-virus, firewall, popup stopper, etc.

This is the Google version of MS newsgroups for XP, same problem as you. Let us know what the solution is.
