actually, relying on Ping to provide feedback when trying to resolve external DNS entries is highly overrated and in many cases
will fail. the fact that you are trying to do so, speaks volumes to me about your level of understanding of DNS and other network issues.
more & more isp's now block icmp packets at the client's router in a effort to foil DoS attacks. and in cases where they let the packets thru, the website router at the other end itself may be filtering those same packets.
for example, go to a command prompt and try to ping
www.yahoo.com. i'm sure you'll get a replyback.
now try pinging
www.ibm.com or
www.hp.com...did you get a replyback? i'll bet some of you did not.
so does the fact that the ping did not generate a reply mean that dns is not working? nope, because obviously your browser can reach the site.
