Peanut Linux is a very small download/install. I think it'd be worth messing with it to just check it out a bit.

Peanut Linux as vass linked to would work OK, but realise that 32MB RAM is not really enough to run X-windows with, so you really will be stuck with command line functionality, and won't be able to use a wizz-bang GUI like Gnome or KDE.

If you can give it 64MB RAM, then it should run a GUI OK then.

If you want any more help, PM me.

Cheers
Mick

You could use a lighter GUI like Fluxbox
(64MB would still be highly recommended!)

<pbharris: fvwm2!!! Thats the way to go!>

Use Vector Linux. I did on my P133 laptop with 32mb of RAM. It ran great and was very easy to set up. I used IceWM, the default in Vector, and it was nice and fast even with 32mb RAM.

I second the Vector Linux suggestion. Download their LiveCd version and try that first and see how it works with your hardware. Of course, you will not be able to access it speed that way, but, you could at least get an idea of hardware support and stuff. If all is well and you like, go for it. I believe you can install from the live version. If not, the ISO is small.

Ummm, the key word there is 'really'... what Mick meant to post was 32 megs won't run X windows very quickly; I have personally run RedHat 6.0 using X on a P133 with 16 megs and lots of hard disk virtual memory swapping action. Too slow for me, but was totally functional... I played MP3s via XMMS.

Only other issue I see is whichever Linux you choose, be certain that your Pentium (aka 586) CPU is supported, there are some Linux distributions that are not going to work on less than 686 (Pentium II).

Here is a bomb for ya: WorkSpot. Try Linux over the internet, if you have a functional Java installed on your PC.... not CDRs, nothing installed. Click the demo button, top center of the page.
