another router question

I have a d-link DI-704P. I went to the web site got the quik setup guide and the manual (I can't find mine). Followed the directions
I'm using dsl. Win xp pro. Well I can't connect when the router is hooked up the way the directions say, so I can't get to the routers web page for setup. But the dsl modem alone works fine.
Any Ideas?

I'm using the b. I reset it to factory default according to the manual. It was hooked up to my other computer, but I lost the phone line on that one so I need too use it on this one. Just a reverse usage.

when you connect the computer to the router, it should give it a 192.168.... number. Do you get this?

Does the router need to be connected when do the ipconfig? Right now it is not connected because I wouldn't be able to get internet access. the auto config address is 169.254.100.48
there are 4 more adresses listed

what you need to do is this

connect the router to the modem, and then connect the computer to the router.

turn on the router, then the cable modem, then the computer

then check the ip address.
