Graphics cards and accelerator cards

This has been really bugging me for some time now but i was wondering if there is anything in the theory that you can buy a graphics card and then buy an accelerator card to 'boost' the graphics cards capabilities.

Is this possible or am i just talking trash again?
If this is possible and im not talking rubbish would it be possible to plug it into any newer (graphics) cards instead of buying a newer more expensive version?

PLEASE I NEED TO KNOW!!!!

There used to be 3d accelerator cards, but not any more. Back in the Voodoo and Voodoo 2 days, they were separate cards that your 2d graphics card would plug into.

These days the 2d and 3d are integrated into one chip.
