Outdoors XP Activation SUCKS!!!!!

Here's the deal I just installed a licensed version of Windows XP Pro on my machine. The copy was supplied by my college as well as the license. So everything went fine until I changed monitors, all of a sudden a message appears that my "hardware has changed significantly since the instalation" and that I have to "register my product again". I'm like WTH , I installed it yesterday and it's telling me that I have to register it AGAIN cause my hardware has changed because I changed monitors! What is that? I only use Windoze for my games nothing else, if it wasn't for that it would be of my HD a long time ago. Anyway that's it, I'll keep this thread updated and see how all this works out.

It sounds like either a false positive (its messed), or something else signifigant changed as well because that is not supposed to happen. Good luck in figuring out what it is.

If that particular copy of the OS is a single usewr copy, and it was previously installed on another box (perhaps at school) and activated to that box's hardware makeup, then when you installed it on a new machine you may have just gotten lucky that the initial (second install) activation was at first successful. Maybe that new monitor was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Anyway, I've made significant hardware changes on previously activated licensed copies of XP, and just had to call MS (it is an 800 number in US) to explain the situation. I got my new activation codes over the phone in about 5 minutes.

YGPM Martoch, thanks for the help. BTW the license is not a single user license, I still can't figure out why a monitor would cause such a thing if it's not "supposed" to happen? I already called m$ they told me that I need to know how many computers have that license installed, so now I have to ask the system adminstrator so that I can call m$ again and see what they tell me now, this SUCKS, really. Thanks for the help everyone I'll keep you updated .

It seems like they should take the answer that it's a college-wide license, since they have different keys and they should be able to see that..

It's really strange that changing a monitor would cause that. I thought the major components it looked at were all inside the case (CPU serial, MAC address, etc)
