Novell Login with Windows XP

Greetings. Where I work, we are currently in a quandry regarding out Novell Network (Netware 6). We currently use Windows 98SE and are toying with the possibility of upgrading all/most of our machines to Windows XP Professional. We have a few 'test' machines that we bought to see how it would work with Novell, and so far we are disappointed with the results. We are encountering a problem during login and after hours of research, I am just about ready to pull out my hair. Any advice/suggestions on the below problem would be highly appreciated.

Here is the problem we are having: During login we only want our users (public education, K-12) to have to login once with their Novell NDS usernames/passwords. We then don't want the computers to store the user's profile indefinitely. Currently on the Windows XP machines, we have to create an account on the machine under Administrator before the user can login to the workstation. With 350+ computers and 900+ users, this obviously isn't an option. I've tried a few different steps from guides I've found online, but haven't had any luck whatsoever.

The general fix guidelines seem to be:
1) Have the computer login via an Administrator account locally, authenticate via NDS (Novell Directory Services) to the network. -- I've tried this numerous ways but have not been able to get this to work.
2) Someway to completely ignore the local Windows XP login (use a default profile each startup?), and only login via NDS. -- Nothing I've found along these lines have worked either.

But, as I said, I'm receptive to /ANY/ tips, tricks, suggestions, links, etc. I'll respond to each idea as well and let you guys know what works. From the amount of information I've seen online, I definitely know that we aren't the only Novell Network with this trouble. Thanks in advance for any assistance/help that anyone can provide

Zenworks is the way to go. That way you can create a user policy that automatically creates an NT useraccount on the windows box in whatever usergroup you choose. You also have the option to delete that account when the user logs off. We do this at many places, and it works with Windows 2000. I see no reason why it shouldn't work with XP as well. Good Luck.

Mmmm.. After even more experimenting today, I discovered a "Dynamic Local User" menu under the User Policy Packages. With your advice, I was able to figure out that it would add/remove the user successfully (most of the time)... Now only if I could figure out why 10% of the time it doesn't make the local user and instead, errors.

Sorry to hear of your situation Jutral. I was in a similar situation but since have moved off Novell except for GroupWise.

I had similar problems but what worked best for me was adding an AD domain and NAM2.1 (which was difficult to get working). Then you can create a vbs script to delete old user profiles.
