Simple Network Question

this is probably a really stupid question, but can anyone tell me whether a computer connected to a large network with network points around a building (cat 5 cable, 100mbps network) had a hub installed between it and the network point and several computers were running off this hub, would this slow each computer down or would they get the same speed connection as before whereby each computer had its own network point

sounds complicated, probably my explanation!!

would be really grateful for any assistance

Thanks

Since the hub broadcasts everything to every port in the hub, it does mean that all the computers on that hub share the 100mbit the hub has. A switch would be faster, but since the uplink port usually also is 100mbit, they still share the 100mbit. Is that what you wanted to know?

Disclaimer: I might not be entirely right, but I'm sure someone else will tell us so if I'm not.

True.
Hub spams everything to everyone while switch makes the corresponding computers communicate with each other without slowing down the others in the same segment.
However, not even a switch will help you with a situation where two computers chat with one computer. The one computer will not have two 100mb connections but one shared 100mb connection.

thanks so far... i'll try to expand - i normally access data on a server, will this be slowed if i have to connect through a hub with another computer sharing my network point which is accessing the same data/or other data at the same time

Does this help?

With a hub, yes. With a switch, not necessarily (depends on who is sharing data with whom).

I'm sure someone can give you an actual algorithm for this, though.

Cheers
Mick
