AMD XP 2500+

A while back I set my 2500+ to 166mhz so it would be 2500+ but when I was looking the device manager trying to fix my mouse for playing games I noticed this. The pciture shows 1.1 ghz does that mean my processor is defaulting at 1.1ghz. Also, if this is correct why did it go down from the 2500+ level?

With the FSB set to 166 MHz, your mutiplier must be set to 11 to achieve 2500+ status (1.83 GHz)

Yup. It looks like it's running at 100MHz FSB.

I'm just curious but what brand is your motherboard or entire computer? I've bought prebuilt and custom computers before and the bus speed has never been underclocked like that.

Post your mobo type to get more specific help. If you are unfamilar with manual settings in the bios, try this:

At the first screen, press F1 or delete, (whatever it says) to enter setup. Toggle to the line that says "advanced Bios features". and look at the bottom of that screen.

You should have a choice of "load optimized defaults, or Load performance defaults" by hitting F7 or so. Save and exit.

Could be your ram is 100 mhz, but it is doubtful. The correct ram for 166 FSB is PC 2700 DDR, or DDR 333 (166x2)

The optimized or perforamnce defaults should set your system to the highest safe or "default" speed of the components.

Actually, most motherboard bios are deisgned to default to lowest compatible speed on a new flash (or clear CMOS). The point being that you will at least be able to POST with any compatible hardware no matter how slow.

That still doesn't explain why it dropped down after you set it correctly (unless of course you flashed or clear CMOS).

Hi all. I just bought a new computer with the same "problem". How do I go about making my XP2500 work optimally (I have a MSI K7 MB w/ 400mhzFSB)? I don't want to take the overclocking route (yet). Is my cpu configured correctly or was I sold the wrong chip?

Go into BIOS and see that fsb speed is set to 166mHz (or "auto" or "default"... whatever term your mobo uses), not 100mHz or 133mHz. If "Auto" or "Default" still yields an 1100mHz speed, then change fsb in BIOS to "166mHz".
