Here are a couple of generalizations:

NVidia: intermediate user, good overall "out of the box",easy to use software

ATI: advanced users, better oclocking, passionate followers

The ATI has a rep for being a power hog. If you have added a few things to a "OEM" rig, your are gonna need to upgrade the power supply at some point.

Dallas, I disagree with that. nVidia users are just as advanced as ATI users. People are just a passionate about nvidia as some are about ATI.

Munkey, check out http://www.pricewatch.com I picked up a Radeon 9700 (way better than the 9600) for 216 shipped.

ATI cards usually use less power than nVidia cards.

Personal opinion......get a Geforce fx 5600 card. It supports direct x 9 and scores pretty well on most tests. It is cheap at about $160 too! I'm kinda sounding like a commercial now.........anyways at the bottom is a site that compares the 2 cards.

go on....you know you want the Geforce...

All of the GeForce FX series have DirectX 9 capabilities, but the 5200 and 5600 are not all that good.... Believe me, I own a 5600 and a few of my friends have 5200s. They do well with the games we play (Warcraft III, Counter-Strike) but they just don't perform very well. I would suggest a 5900, but you have a $200 budget, so I'd go with a Radeon 9600 Pro. It's not quite a 9800, but I *think* it's the best you can get with your budget.

I agree, the Geforce series was exellent but why did they have to mess up and release the FX, why could it not be the Geforce 5.

The FX 5200 and the FX 5600 are a joke, I bought a 5600 once but returned it because of how slim of a upgrade it was from my Radeon 9000 Pro.

nVidia wanted a different name. Seriously, after 4, the name gets old. Do you expect to see Pentium 5's as well?? The only FX card that was really "messed up" was the FX 5800. The others are OK.
