Outdoors AMD 2000+ Slower than my Pentium 600!!

I figured it was time for a new computer in spring and baught an Extreme with an AMD 2000+ processor. This was replacing my old Pentium 600. I set it up and everything only to discover that it seems to be just as slow!
It is running XP home. You really notice it when you exit a game and it loads windows back up (or at least try's). It takes longer than my 600 did and even longer to get the background picture to fully come back.
Does anyone know if this is just a simple problem to fix? or should I even try and send it back saying there might be a hardware problem?

I misunderstood the post, and apologize for my former comments.

Try optimized defaults and start over from there.

Phideaux,

no insulting on the board, read the rules.

He is not asking for that kinda comment, he asks for help.

LittleGuyBigJeep,

have you put a clean install of XP when you switched to the XP2000??
Or are you still using the same installation??

Also, the reference to loading Windows, etc., makes me wonder if the HD is running in PIO (compatability) mode rather than DMA/UDMA.

Unlikely since my 1700+ completely blows away my friends 900MHz pentium III. When I say completely blows away I mean his takes upto 4 times longer to do the same things.

Maybe an antivirus killing the machine ?

Or maybe a 1600 with 64 MB memory ?
