Windows 98 memory error

hey guys

On my computer that has windows 98 on it when I try to run scan disk or do a defrag i get a error that i do not have enought memory. I have 384 meg of ram. It has a 700mhz AMD processor If that helps. Do not know what mother boad it is. I have also turned on the option so that some of my hard drive acts like ram. So now i am stuck... and for the life of me i dont know what is wrong cuz i think there is more than enought ram there for it to use. If any of you know how to fix this problem it would be wonderful.

Thanks for the help
Ricky

Try running them under Safe Mode.
Also, just a FYI, you can download and use ME's defrag utility on 98. It will run in about 1/4 of the time of 98's defrag. You can find ME's defrag and instructions for changing them at:

rickytim,
Check out if the memory you are low on is "system resources"... this is a different situation than low ram.

Been a while since W98, I don't recall offhand where to check (maybe Start... Control Panel... System... )

Download a cache manager and set your max file cache to about half of your memory or you can do this:

Go to start and click on run. Type in "system.ini" (without the quotes). Look for vcache inside the brackets. If not there create one, "[vcache]" (without the quotes). Under vcache type in "MaxFileCache=196608" (without the quotes). Close and save it and reboot.

This may be your problem as windows by default will allocate the entire memory for max file cache. Once all the address blocks are used all the memory has been reserved. By defining the max cache with any amount around 1/4 to 1/2 of your memory and you'll have some memory for your applications.

wju425,
That's a good thought, but Win9x out of memory issues due to the condition you just described occur when the user has more than 512mb RAM.

Funny you said that but I'm running win98se and with 512 mems. I used to have 384 mems and ran into this problem.
