Which OS for my Friend?

Hey'all

I have a friend that is asking me what OS he should get for his empty HD (Samsung 40GB 5400 RPM). Windows OS, since he is only going to use it for games. He told me to get information about which one would give him better gaming performance in relationship to his system:

AMD Athlon XP 2000+
GeForce 2 MX440 (I know its not the best one, he is going to buty a new one soon, he told me.
512 MB RAM

He was thinking of XP but I told him that the only thing that worries me is the RPM in his HD, since most recommend at least 7200 for XP. Any ideas, comments?

P.S. I already showed him the benchmarks from Tomshardware that compares the OS in terms for gaming. After seeing this bench he said he was going to put XP (Professional) on it since it got great results on it, but I told him to wait, since I was going to ask you guys first. He agreed

My first initial thought when I saw the subject line was, "Well that depends...do you want to keep him as your friend?" lol.

If yes, then install XP Pro.
If no, then install ME. lol.

I'm running XP Pro with an older hd...it runs at 5400rpm and the games play fine for me. Granted...I've yet to compare it to a hd with 7200rpm, so who knows I might be missing out. Perhaps someone else can shed more light?

Either way...XP is the way to go IMO.

you can't really go wrong with either 2k or xp. I've used both and both are very stable and both game good as well.

I've heard 98se is actualy slighly faster for running games... but if you weigh both sides 2k or xp beats the pants off of any win 9x OS. Between 2k and XP its really just what you prefer. XP is basically just 2k with some more user friendly wizard and a little more eye candy. Personally I prefer XP over 2000, not to mention I think XP is cheaper.

My first choice - 2K Family, you can take an axe to them and they still work,

XP Pro is good, it does the biz, especially if you know how to turn on the computer and little else!

How literate is your friend ?
