how do you do a memory test

I'm trying to figure out a problem with my friends 5bw220,running ME, in systems
resource her memory (63.0MB) is highlited in red, I formated her partitioned
C/D drive, and deleted all files, also minimized start up items, getting disc
space at 88% free,also removed her AOL, ran scan disc, ran defrag, and memory is
still highlited in red. aside from this unit being a piece of junk, can you
help?, thanks for your time . firefly
