Kids Can't use my floppy drive....?????

I know..... who wants to use the floppy anyway. Every once in a while I need to.

When I insert a disk, which I know is good, it gives me a message to insert a disk. I noticed that the little green light is on all the time. Normally this only lights up when data is being read. I just reassembled this PC. Is it possible I connected the wires incorrectly? I'm running XP Pro, it says all is well. I already unistalled the drivers, rebooted, but it still doesn't work.

Any suggestions?

Yes, this has been asked 10^x times.
You have the floppy cable reversed, which causes the access light to be on all times.
Flip the cable and it should be fine.

it's quite possible (or if you are me, extremely likely) that the ribbon cable is on upside down , or has been offset a little bit so it misses the first couple of pins and hags over the far edge. it may be easier to connect this cable to the drive , then install the drive and connect to the mobo end afterwards, not forgetting to reconnect the power lead afterwards.

wavewuver,
After you have tried the drive outside the case (i.e., not screwed into the bracket) and eliminated/corrected the cable position as a problem -- and assuming the drive works properly when not physically mounted -- then take a look at the mounting screws.

If the screws are too long and screw too far into the floppy drive case body, they can cause the exact problem you describe. If that is your situation, try the shortest screws you have when you mount the drive.

PS: Floppy cables can be installed at least four ways, three of which are wrong Make sure the section of cable with the crossed over portion is positioned closest to the floppy drive, and that the notch on the connector is properly oriented.

I really don't know for sure what I did right. I kept flipping the flat cable around at the mobo and the floppy until I found a combo that worked.....lol
