Kids Toshiba laptops and winXP

Hi all,

I've got a question that has puzzled me for a while.

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 with the specs of celeron 400 with 96mb ram and a 6GB HDD.

Now I know putting winXP on this laptop may not have been the smartest thing to do, however I was fed up win98 crashing on me every other time.

The weird thing is that when I look up system properties, winXP tells me that I have a celeron 198mhz cpu, which I'm pretty sure is not the case.

Is this a purely an aesthetic error? I have run other software that can determine my CPU speed and that too tells me that i am only running at 200mhz. Could it be that my RAM is affecting the bus speed, thus causing the CPU to run slower?

Any advice/help appreciated.

Welcome to TechIMO and to the wonderful world of Microsoft. You are not alone....These are a bit old but should give you an idea:

Intel Pentium III or Celeron CPU Identified as Pentium II or Pentium Pro
http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q216/2/04.ASP

CAUSE
This issue occurs because Windows 95 and Windows 98 are not able to correctly identify an Intel Pentium III or Celeron CPU.

RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, identify your CPU by visually inspecting it, or by viewing the documentation included with your computer.
