win98 network problem :(
I have a sort of weird problem... I am trying to fix a computer that is directly connected to a cable modem... it's running win98 and I installed the cable modem, and a firewall... it was working great for almost a month, but then I got a call yesterday that it wasn't working... it would seem that the computer is not querying DNS or it is not getting a response... it can ping computers by IP address... but it won't resolve the host names.. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling tcp/ip protocols, and even tried several different network cars... but nothing seems to fix the problem... any help would be great!

my mates cable modem needs an occasional winipcfg release all/renew all to get it responding again, but has your mate been changing tcp/ip settings, I couldn't use explorer until i checked the use default gateway on remote network option, but i was getting some network activity (as i recall my p2p network program was working)

What do you mean "it can ping computers by ip address"? Do you mean you can ping websites by ip address or is this pc connected to a LAN?

I agree with paul9.
Could be as simple as powering down the modem for a couple of minutes, shutting down the computer, restart the modem, and re-booting.

yes, first thing to do is always just power down the modem and the computer....let them sit a few minutes, then power on the modem..then the computer.
If its not working then, you can always call tech support at the cable company because they can see from their end what is going on with the connection.

nope, it's not the service, I have it at my house now, and it's doing the same thing, and I am connected here... and the IP address thing... say www.google.com was 123.123.123.1 and I tried to ping www.google.com... it would say unable to reach host www.google.com... but... if I would ping 123.123.123.1 then it would ping fine.

When you went thru the wizard or whatever for the router, did you enter the correct DNS serverIP address??
Usually the ISP gives you two addresses for a primary DNS and a backup DNS server address.
Look in your router config page and see what your dns settings are..call your ISP and ask what they are supposed to be.

Yep, that's a sure sign of incorrect DNS settings. It can't resolve names for ya.
Might be the ISP changed DNS servers without telling ya. Mine did, once. They assumed everyone got DNS automatically for their servers via DHCP. I don't, I use a linux router box that has DNS sepcificed.
Oh, and another trick to check DNS: enter the IP into a browser in the format http://ipaddress, and see if it can find the site. If it can, and the name doesn't work, it's merely DNS not resolving.
Cheers
Mick

okay, so now I am really confused... as of right now, I can ping and resolve IP addresses... but, I can't establish any connections... I try doing the http://ipaddress in IE but it doesn't work. I ping a site, by www.blahblahblah.com and I get the IP address and a good ping. but if I try to FTP to say webpages.charter.net (which I can ping fine) then it doesn't connect for whatever reason.... I have tried netscape, AIM, IE, and MSN but nothing will connect. this is getting very annoying!

Can you post a winipcfg here. Maybe it will shed some light.
