Kids Strange computer problems?

When I turn on my computer I can't read my post screens anymore. They are jumbled, letters missing, and strange stuff like dollar signs and smiley faces and such. The computer is very unstable also. I have no idea where to begin with this problem. All of this started right after my last windows update.

There are alsp problems with the display at times. Pixels are the wrong color. Sometimes I'll have blue pixels speckeling my screen.

I'm running windows xp home edition
2500+ Barton
Abit NF7-s 2.0
420 watt PSU
Abit Siluro Ti-4200 video card

What happens if you try to access the BIOS? Can you read the BIOS screens properly?

If you can't read the BIOS screens then it's most likely your video card or the monitor cable. Not much you can do about the monitor cable though.

I used to have this happen to me (long time ago) and it was the video card, got funny flashing $ signs with random backgrounds, then when I got past that (this was DOS days) and started playing doom, it would randomly change white pixels purple...

Pretty sure Sean is right on this one.

(My Samsung 19" that's in getting fixed has a replaceable monitor cable)

Sounds like you have a couple of bent pins on your monitor cable.

Well that bites. I tried to do a fix of the windows OS using the recover disc yesterday right after I posted this thread. My computer is stuck in a loop now where set-up cannot complete and then it restarts and tries to complete set-up again.

I guess I'll try to use a different monitor and see if there is an option that isn't showing up with the current monitor.

go into bios and DISABLE ANTIVIRUS monitor. I had the same loop problem and left setup running all night 'til I realised what was wrong It's really funny when you wake up and setup is just starting again for the 75th time
