Svchost.exe Ram Hog........

Hello There,

I have been disabling services and the main thing that i was trying to stop was a svchost service that is always using a large amount of ram:

I cant seem to disable it though. Any one know exactly what service it is? Every winxp install that i have ever seen has this service running. Its using way to much ram for my liking. Hopefully it is not an important service....

So anyone got some info on this?

Thanks
Sam

There are a number of services that are required for XP to run. Some of them run under the generic service host SVCHOST.exe.. not much you can do about it unless you're going to nag to MS

All you can do is narrow down and disable the services like that POS Background INtelliegent Transfer Service

bottom line is there are always services that are required... why they're required is a completely different story we may never know

Hi, take a look here : http://www.aumha.org/a/loads.htm

SERVICES in WINDOWS XP

In addition to the foregoing, in Windows XP you should examine the Services that are automatically launched at startup. You can see these by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, then clicking the Processes tab, or by launching the Services management tool that you will use to modify them. To launch the Services tool, log in as an Administrator, then click Start | Control Panel | Performance & Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Services. (Note that this Control Panel item is simply a shortcut, which you can copy to your desktop or anywhere else you want it.) Even faster, from a Run box (click Start | Run or press Win+R) type SERVICES.MSC.

By default, Windows initiates many Services you just don't need. For example, if you aren't on a network, there are at least half a dozen Services that should be set to Manual rather than Automatic - meaning, they still can be launched, but will not launch automatically at Windows startup.

To view the list of services that are running in Svchost:
Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and then click Run .

In the Open box, type CMD , and then press ENTER.

Type Tasklist /SVC , and then press ENTER.

Tasklist displays a list of active processes. The /SVC switch shows the list of active services in each process. For further information about a process, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
Tasklist /FI "PID eq processID " (with the quotation marks)
