Bad Performance Problem
My sons computer is running slow.It takes forever to even open a program, any program.
I have ran a virus scan, with no viruses found,ad-aware and removed all the junk, ran diskkeeper and defragged the HDD,and it is a little better, but still sluggish.
I also deleted a bunch of pics and stuff to make room on the HDD,thought maybe more space would help,no change.
No BSODs,or Errors of any kind, just runs like a bag of hammers.
Win98SE
Amptron 9800
AMD K6/2 450
128 MB SDRAM
16 MB Creative Banshee
250 watt PSU (AT System)
CD-Burner (Won't burn above 4x could be related?)
This just started a couple of days ago.Any Help is greatly appreciated
Thanx

Cleaned out temp files? I'd also clean out the registry. That's probably the culprit. I use Fix It Utilities, but there are a ton of free registry cleaners out there.
Here's a good one. (RegClean) http://download.com.com/3000-2094-881470.html?tag=list |

I ran Ad-aware and found 235 objects,so I installed AVG,and pulled 3 viruses off,and I did a scandisk just to be safe.
I think I have this one fixed,it's running much better
U_S, if you can keep the old install it's a plus, you don't loose all the info

I defrag my system every week, and check for viruses every week, and run Ad-aware/Spybot every week, clean my Temp files every week. You get my point. It runs like a Porche! You should be feeling embarassed of yourself brainchild, leaving your son without any help while you have a fun time @yours! j/k

I recommend you to get a firewall such as zonealarm, then press stop all internet activity. if it speeds up after this, you may also have trojans on your system. (or just check with an anti trojan program in the first place, but still get a firewall anyway). I have noticed a great deal of slowdown on some trojanned systems I have come across, so this springs to mind as a possible culprit. |

I reccommend people to format their computer every year at the longest. Especially home users, they tend to install loads of junk they don't use or need, and rarely defrag. A clean install with a fixed size swapfile has solved many a problem.
