Surge killed comp.. troubleshooting???

I have a system that was on loan to my GF. specs as follow:
ASUS P5A w/ AMD K6 450 Mhz
Diamond V770 Ultra

The last she used it was before the NE power outage. We had several surges through this area. System was properly shut down and plugged into a surge protector. The surge protector was tripped.

System is now dead in the water. No action at all... Zilch, Zip, Nada.

Where and how do I begin trouble-shooting. How can I narrow it down to power supply or mobo without swapping either out (not an option).

Also... should it be the mobo... can anyone recommend a cheap replacement?

i havent experienced a surge yet but if all else fails for u there's always the $50,000 equipment warranty that all good surge protectors come with.

This is basically a process of elimination. But I have a friend who recently had a similar problem after lightning came in through the phone line. After removing the modem and network card it would boot again. Evidently there was short in the 2 cards that prevented the system from powering up. Good Luck.

It will be hard to diagnose if you don't swap some components or try them in a different system. Do try removing all cards except video and see it that helps. Assuming ATX power supply, disconnect the connector at the motherboard and short between the green connector and the black one next to it. (A paper clip will work). Plug it in and see if it powers up (fan runs). If not the PSU is probably bad (perhaps other thing also.) This is the way I would start.

Good luck.
