MrMcGriddle is on a distinguished road
reformating during xp setup

im at the setup screen of xp where it gives me a choice of deleting the c partition. Is that option that will reformat the c drive

If you delete the partition it wil reformt.

Select the partition, hit D to delete the partition and it will ask you to confirm by hitting Enter, then possibly L. Then if you want to use the entire unallocated space in a single partition, hit Enter and select the format type, it will automatically create the partition then format it. If you want to set a partition size - delete the partition as described above, then hit C and set the size, THEN hit Enter to format.

I always use a 4gb partition for my windows installes. That away if i ever have to reinstall i wont have to lose all my info/data
