No Monitor Signal from Asus A7N8X

Hi there, folks.

I have finally completed building my first computer... Oh, the excitement when I first booted it up... Until nothing happened.

Sure, the fans began to whiz and the Hard Drive whirred and scratched and the CD drive will open and the floppy drive light comes on and all the good stuff...

But, the light on the monitor stays orange. I assume this means its getting no signal. And I get no POST beep when the comp is turned on. There are no beeps whatsoever... at least there aren't any error beeps.

Anyway, these are all the specs:

I'd appreciate any ideas about what may be causing this... Thanks.

Did you try to turn on the motherboard with just the cpu, ram and videocard OUTSIDE THE CASE? (just in case the motherboard is shorting with the case!).

Did you make sure your RAM and Video Card are wll inserted?

Do you have it hooked up to speakers? The a7n8x uses a voice post system. An annoying lady says what you need to know. My guess is she'll say "System failed vga test" Or something similar. If all is well she'll say something like "Power-on self test completed, now boting from operating system." Try another card if you have one, or maybe pull the one in there, clean the contacts and put it back, making sure it's seated properly.

Interesting. She said "System failed memory test."

And therein lies another issue. I bought a single stick of "CORSAIR 512MB PC3200 VALUE SELECT. VS512MB400 DDR RAM - OEM."

Now, when I insert the stick into the slot, the opened clamps should close, correct? Well, the notches on this stick of RAM don't seem to align with the clamps. They are above where the clamps would enter the notches. Thus, the RAM isn't inserted very well. I don't see how Corsair DDR RAM wouldn't be the right size for this slot...

Maybe I'm not putting it in quite right... But this should be fairly simple, right?

Thanks for the help.

^bump^

I posted a similar thread at the Corsair forums, but I haven't heard anything from them yet.

I've tried putting the RAM in all three slots-- no good.

I had a similar problem with Corsair pc 2700 and and MSI K7n2 board. Fought with it a week, and finally bought a single stick of 256 mb value ram, and it booted and loaded windows just fine. Then the Corsair ram worked.

I have no idea why.

I see...

Do you think I could just grab a stick of 256 and use that to boot and load Windows, then replace it with the Corsair and then return the 256 to the store?

Woah. I feel like an idiot. But, I'm a n00b anyway, so its okay.

I just had to press REALLY hard on the memory (to the point that it broke my skin) to get it to lock into place. Then the computer booted with no problems.

Thanks for the assistance.

Glad you got her working! Just make sure you brace the back of the board when installing the ram that's that tough to put in.
