Windows Update Failure

Posted this prob at bottom of previous thread; thought better of it. Windows Update gives me an error and wont scan my computer or run at all. See attached snapshot of error message. I'm running W98 SE. I previously had sound problems I asked about on here and didn't get any answers. At that time was also getting this same message for Win Update. I "re-installed" W98 SE yesterday and fixed all my sound problems with that but the Win Update Problem did NOT go away. Any ideas or fixes? I figure I need to repatch my system now that I re-installed (although the IE 6 etc. didn't revert back to the 5.5 that was on the CD for 98SE); at the very least there should be a couple of new patches if the old ones remained resident through the re-install. Looking forward to some insight. Thanks,

I've done the report it thing and it emails a message to microsoft but no replies forthcoming. When attempt to run the "built in troubleshooter" get a blank page and when click the yield sign with exclamation, get the message shown in new attachment for this reply. I also left a message on their own forum but no replies yet.

Try running IE repair, or you could uninstall IE 6 and revert to 5.5, then upgrade back to 6. I've fixed a lot of problems doing this.

FOUND IT !!! This fixed it !!! Thanks for your help.

This is due to mismatch or corruption of the msxml.dll files. To resolve, upgrade your parser to the most recent version (currently available at

).
