A7N8X Deluxe and RAM question

Im looking to buy the A7N8X Deluxe Motherboard. I was going to buy Crucial 512MB PC2700 in one stick. but the motherboard is a dual channel memory. I know I can run only one stick in it, but would it be better to just go 2x 256MB modules in dual channel mode instead of one stick of 512MB in single channel?

They say it is, yes. I'm running 2x256 mushkin. Be very vareful on that crucial. I had a stick and it would absolutely not work with the nforce chipset. I recommend Mushkin or Corsair.

Here's the link to the probs I had. The board is different but the chipset is the same.

And a link to Nvidia's approved list:

The benefit you get from DC DDR would depend on the speed of your FSB versus memory. If the speed is the same (say you are running 166(333 DDR) FSB and use PC2700 memory running at the same 333) you get no benefit from having 2x256 over 1x512. You may even see a decrease in performance (probably due to the overhead of using two channels).

you can see some more discussion of this here:

I have the A7N8X Deluxe in Dual Channel Mode with 2 sticks (2 X 256) of Kingston DDR with Heat Spreader.

Buying 2 sticks was more expensive but it works really good with my board. The Kingston is compatible with this board.

My CPU is a Barton 2800+ running @ 166 so i have my RAM set as "agressive" in the BIOS and i have it running also @ 166.

Never had any problems with it.......

I have the deluxe running a 3000+ , 200*11.5 for 2300mhz.
using 2 Kingston "Hyper X" 512 meg ticks in it with no problems.

Eryk:
Are you running your fsb at 208? What do you use for cooling and how hot does your 2500 at 2.3 GHz run? What about memory, is it synced up or running at nominal 400 DDR? Would you mind sharing your settings? Thx!!

Send a message via ICQ to JohnE.
A7N8X Deluxe rev 2, AthlonXP 2200+ (mild multiplier OC; 14.0)

2X256MB OCZ PC3200 Performance Series (not the DCO or EL) in slots 1 & 3 for Dual Channel, Aggressive Timings, running fine so far. I'm waiting for cash for more cooling before I start pushing the OC, so it remains to be seen whether the budget OCZ can handle it or not.

Whichever brand you decide on, I'd get 2X256MB... then pick up a single 512MB when you can afford it, move the 256's to slots 1&2 and put the 512 in slot 3 for 1GB Dual Channel.
