Dell

This topic came up in a discussion in class today and I was wondering if Dell actually manufactures anything or if they just buy everything from other companies and put their name on it.
Anyone who uses Dell or knows the answer I appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

I always thought they bought really cheap OEM products off other companies, put it together with a very quiet case, and sold it at like twice the cost.

As far as I know it's sourced. That's what the sales rep I deal with at work told me.

Sounds like a true industry analyst!!

Dell build their own systems at their own plants using parts purchased from other suppliers. They have created the industry standard for how computers are made and sold primarily through their own manufacturing innovations.

All major electronics firms outsource (as well as most manufacturing firms period).

Dell uses Flextronics for the most part.

Those cheese-wiz-o-matic people over their may know how to build super-quiet computers, but c'mon, can you have fun with an OEM? I mean, I want to be able to leave the side of my case off and upgrade/change it.

They use Intel motherboards. Or rather have intel make a "special" "dell atx" version of some intel motherboard etc...there were a couple discussions yesterday about dell "atx" motherboards not being standard atx.

I know that HP used to always use asus motherboards...like in celly pavillions they used the MEW-am http://store.yahoo.com/justdeals/asmewmotsoci.html

"Dell" printers are made by Lexmark, lol.

I would imagine Dell is sort of like Nike....they dont actually MAKE anything.

My "Dell" dvd burner is an NEC1100a.
