Kids Question on Sygate Personal Firewall

I'm computer illiterate. I have Windows XP(home) and use AOL Broadband. After I downloaded Sygate Personal Firewall and RegMechanic201, connecting to any Internet site became impossible. After I uninstall Firewall and disabled RegMech, everything returned back to normal. Could the Firewall or RegMech cause that?
Even though I've been using Internet exstensively for two years and never got any virus or worm, I'd think the Firewall would be a right thing to have.
Also, can anybody tell me how to create back-up files on CD for the entire system? I'd appreciate any input.

Hey
All I can say is that this happened also to me but with McAfee Firewall. After installing it I couldnt access the internet. Although I have never used Sygate Firewall, I think this is some kind of similar problem. I dont think that RegMechanic has nothing to do with this, this looks like a normal Firewall problem. What type of connection do you use? And yeah, you cant possibly be without a firewall these days. I personally use ZoneAlarm, which IMO is the best "stand-alone" firewall. Although Norton's Firewall is good, but to resource heavy. Try out an other type of firewall since I couldnt fix my Mcafee Firewall with anything literally. It just blocked my internet badly. Try out ZoneAlarm IMO, Site for ZoneAlarm Its free, but if you want the Pro version you will need to pay. I would really like to help you, Try to configure your settings in the options (The Firewall) and see if it is not blocking your internet, it seems to me that its blocking ports that shouldnt be blocked. Well, good luck!

Sygate is a great tool, but if you haven't configured it yes you will block everything.. thats what firewalls do

First thing you can do to make sure its the firewall causing the problem is you can right click the icon in your system tray and say ALLOW ALL.. which does I'm pretty sure you can guess.. allows all internet traffic.
If you can now access all resources you have to figure out the culprit.
You can look at the sygate application and see what applications that require net access are running.
AOL maybe a bit of a pain cause lord knows what they require. You'll definately require their AOL application to run and of course internet exploder.. from there if it still doesn't work come back and we'll see what we can do

I've never used regmech so can't comment on that.

For backups you can manually copy files to cd using any cd writer software..
MS has a backup prog that comes with the OS, but not sure if they included it in XP Home (It would be in start --> program --> accessories.. ) except now that I Think about it... not sure if you can backup to cd with it.

If you want to save an exact replica of your machine off somewhere you can use Norton Ghost.
With that if your system was to crash you can literally go right back where you left off without having to reinstall everything
The problem wth Ghost is... its not free

I experienced a similar problem with Sygate Personal Firewall...Try Kerio Personal Firewall...low ram usage, low cpu time, and it's free! they update frequently. I'm currently experimenting with firewall and other security software after my alma mater was attacked and virtually shut down (server crashed due to viri)...only this week are we finally recovering. I want to protect MYSELF as well...any further suggestions would be helpful
