Help: I'm locked out of my Router

I was messing with stuff last night, trying to increase performance and see if I could fix a small connection problem I was having to numerous game servers when I think I changed something I wasn't supposed to.

I was messing around after while, not quite knowing what I was doing but first I opened up my DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) so I could access all servers and then I went and changed what I thought was the correct IP to change to make them synch up that could have been the problem there, but there's another thing i did too that may have relevance.

The other mistake I did was that I think I changed access from "gateway" to "router" and I'm not sure why. It sounded logical at the time and It had no other purpose than for experimentation. After I hit apply to see how the changes would work I was immediately disconnected from the interney even though the router says im connected and so does my cable.

It seems my computer can't access the router, which is accessing the internet. I tried putting the router's IP back in so I could fix the change but it seems like there is some magical wall of no return to which I can't access the router setup functions anymore. I'm effectively locked out because it's thinking that the router's IP is an internet domain IP and it wont let me in because I'm not connected to the internet.

HELP!!!
Any Suggestions besides blowing $60 on a new one tonight?

It's a Linksys BTW (BEFSR41). If I was too stupid and really messed it up do you have any reccomendations for a new router under $100 with like little no no problems and good connection speed?

Any help ASAP is appreciated, I'm at work right now so I have time for tech support.
If I can't get a proper solution by about 6:00pm I'm heading to radio shack or circuit city on the way home. It's 9:21am at the posting of this message.

Thanks again, Techimo is the best and you guys kick@$$

on the front of the router there is a reset button. insert a paper clip into it hold for 5 to 10 seconds. it should resest everything to defualt configs and password. of course this will clear out any port forwards and other settings

The easiest thing to do is reset the router. To do this, press the little reset button on the back of the router, then you can look in your router documentation to see what the default user name and password is.

The BEFSR41 has a defaults reset button (you'll need a toothpick or paperclip to reach it). Don't recall if you hit the reset with the router powered on or off (read the manual). That should allow you to get in. Default router admin username is nothing (leave blank) and default password is 'admin' (pretty sure, I changed iine a long time ago for security). Once you reset defaults, go to 192.168.1.1 for the router admininstration/setup page.

Cool thanks guys,

I hit the reset button but for like a moment. With a paperclip. It was in the front. I think my problem was that I just didn't hold it down long enough.

Cool, appreciated, I'll try it when I get home.

Didn't work,

Held that button down numerous times for minutes at a time, did the same while it was on and off. The connection lights say the links, all the links are active but nothing is getting thru to my computer.

Are we on a cabel modem here? If so you might want to try and reset it by powering off for a few minutes.

Reset Cable/DSL Router to factory default. If you want to start over and set the router to factory default, put the reset button with a pen or something small enough to go through the hole for 3 seconds or until the Red Diag Light comes on, then restart the computer

99% of the time when networking is involved and they want you to restart your computer its to give the router enough time to come back online and for you to get a new IP... I normally just wait about 5 seconds then go into dos and type ipconfig /release_all then ipconfig /renew_all and I get new info and that normally does the trick... I wouldnt mind rebooting but I have RAID so it adds a bit of time I dont need to waste. ANy Network Gurus have any better reason they ask for a system restart which isnt really part of the router?
