Losing connection

Greetings,

I just started a simple home network. 2 computers, one Microsoft wireless base station and USB adapter.

One comp is running WinXP Home, the other PRO. I am also on a one way cable modem where I have to bring up a web page to dial in or disconnect. I know, it sucks........

The problem is that after I disconnect and shut everything down and I want to get back on, my connection page hangs and then I have to completely by-pass the router to get the page to load.

If I bypass the router and directly connect to my eth card, I have zero problems.

When I connect the router, sometimes I get hangs...web pages go nowhere.

It's getting tiredsome to keep unplugging and plugging the router.

Anyway, before I demonize the router/usb and take it back (only had it for a week) is there anything that I am overlooking in set up? A la operator error, me......

Thanks!

I'm a little fuzzy on your setup. You have a wireless router and both computers have a wireless USB adapter?

When you say you're disconnected, you mean from just the internet, or are the computers no longer able to see each other. Can you still see the router when disconnected?

osprey4, Thanks for replying

I have a Microsoft wireless router (base station) operating Win Xp home.

The other has the USB adapter, operating WinXP Pro.

I get disconnected from the net. The computers are able to see each other. Still not able to access the other computer's files and major problems with trying to set up a shared printer, but those are other issues....I first want to establish a stable network

I get good speeds while connected, however briefly.

I have also checked for any firmware updates but none were available.

Still a little confused.

You have your XP Home machine connected through ethernet cable to the router, and the XP Pro machine connected via wireless USB adapter?

Osprey4,

Yes. The cable modem is plugged to the router, port 1 on the router is plugged to my eth card on WinXP home.

The second computer is WinXP pro, hooked up via USB adapter

The two can read each other, it's the internet connection that seems to get dropped. It will work for awhile.......

Now if I bypass the router and hook directly to my eth card, no problems.

I'm not too familiar with these one-way connections. What's the ISP? Does your ISP require MAC cloning (where the MAC of your adapter is cloned into the router)?

Has this set up worked before and just recently stopped working?

I am not sure about the MAC cloning for my adapter.

Everything worked like it should, got the router up and running and the puters saw each other, was able to surf the web with both computers.

I would monitor my status and watch the red "no net connection" periodically flash which was annoying.

Then I would lose the connection altogether.

You know, you have exactly the same problem i have. I have two lan cards in my host computer and hook up to the other through an other lan card. It has worked for over a year and just over a week now i started losing the connection. I have no problem if i disconnect the second computer from the network. It looks to me, the problem is the renewal of ip address. May be the two systems are fighting each other over IP ADDRESS. I suggest you check with ur isp as i'm doing. Let me know their response. I will let u know mine.
