Will this rig work with Linux?

Here's my specs:

2500+ at 2800+ speeds
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
Sound Blaster Audigy
LiteOn burner
AOpen 56k modem as a backup (can be removed, I never use it)
Unused Netgear LAN
No sloppy floppy
BFG Ti 4200

Will this stuff work with Linux on a dual-boot with XP Pro? I plan on using either Manrake 9.1, RedHat, or SuSE. I have no idea on how to install things like drivers and programs as I'm a super n00b when it comes to Linux, so the easier the better.

I think the only problem you'll have with that system is the Aopen modem. It's likely a winmodem and doesn't have any linux support. I used to have an Aopen modem and there wasn't a driver available for it. That's not to say that someone hasn't written a driver since my attempt to install linux while still on dialup.

The following site has some info and a link to a database of supported modems: http://www.linmodems.org/

The rest of the hardware listed is pretty common, and as such, you shouldn't have any compatibility problems in linux.

Yeah the modem was a hand-me-down from another comp because the modem was broken. I can take it out any time I want, because I'm DSL-equipped.

Yes that setup will work just fine. To get 3-d acellerated video you will need to install the updated drivers for Nvidia, but we can walk you through the easy process for whatever Linux distribution you settle on. Mandrake 9.1 PowerPack Edition includes an earlier version of these drivers that will work okay and is installed automatically if the proper packages are selected during install.

BTW - your CDs should be there today, they are out from Tualatin for delivery to Newberg according to the UPS tracking number.

Yeah, I'm still waiting for the package. Thanks again!

On the nVidia drivers: The only reason I would need to have them installed would be to play, um, TuxRacer. I get about 1fps in it on my laptop, because theirs not video drivers installed lol... I just wish I could keep my overclocked video card when I put linux on here. No matter, I still use Windows for gaming.

Just as a FYI, you can clock video cards under linux. nvclock is one such tool but I have never used it so no idea how good it is.

This program allows you to overclock your nVidia chip based video card.
You need to have the official nVidia drivers installed.
