Made my Newegg Order

I made my hardware order from Newegg, about 15 minutes ago. Should have my stuff by Monday. I want to thank all the members who helped in my decision. I got some excellent advice.

Here's my stuff:

ABIT motherboard, IS7/Intel 865PE chipset - 800 fsb
Pentium 4 2.4CGhz (800Mhz bus)
512 MB - Corsair 2 x 256 DDR PC3200

I'll be translplanting this into my current case (ANTEC) along with my drives, cards, etc. My son will get my old mobo and Pentium III, along with the memory. We have a trickle-down economy in our house. All 3 of my kids will benefit, with my 12 year-old daughter getting my son's old Pentium III. My 19 year-old daughter has her laptop. And that gives us an extra Pentium II to keep in the den.

This is the first big upgrade for me in nearly 3 years. I bought the NVIDIA FX 5200 and the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz soundcard just a couple of months ago. I got a Viewsonic 17' flatscreen in April. On Monday, I'll complete the final stage of the upgrade. That should hold me until Christmas Actually, I'll be upgrading to Windows XP and another 512 in about a month. Thanks again. TechIMO has been a blessing for me. Wish I'd found you sooner!

Robert

We subscribe to this theory also. My son is running my old AMD XP 1600 and HSF right now on a new Biostar board. This was an upgrade from a PIII 550.

Yup, the Santa Cruz goes in my new system. I had read the posts about the sound. It's nearly impossible to find mobos without onboard sound. I saw that my new mobo comes with an onboard Gig LAN. That should add a boost to our home network. Now I'm just counting the days!

Xeroid, I also passed my building skills to my 17 year-old son. He'll be doin his own transplants, as well as the one on his younger sister's computer. He recently bought an 80 GB Maxtor, and has been thinking about getting LINUX, so he can play around with it. He's thought about a computer career, but since his dad (me), recently lost his government computer job, he's looking into something different. Good idea!

GroundZero3, go pack your bags I was wondering about the gig lan. I have dsl, and run the upstairs through a 4-port Linksys router/firewall. I also have the Linksys 2.4 Ghz wireless access point for downstairs and the laptop. I'm a DB programmer, so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Robert

well im 20 so i dont think you want me near you 19 year old daughter all kidding aside

gig card are 10/100/1000 so it should work on a normal 10/100 lan. You just wont get to enjoy the 1000 unless you get something like this and have another computer with a 10/100/1000 card in it. Of course the cost of 10/100/1000 cards are still a little pricey

dr_roberts49 how far are you from Baltimore? I visit my dad at least once a month up and hes about 20 minutes south of Balitmore.

Thanks for the tip GroundZero3. I don't think I'll be upgrading in that direction right away.

I'm actually from California. Born & bred. We all moved out here 5 years ago, when my x-wife got an offer to work at Johns Hopkins. We settled in Columbia about 3 years ago, after living in Towson (7 miles north of Baltimore) for 2 years.

Columbia sits between Baltimore and DC, with Baltimore being slightly closer at about 22 miles to downtown Baltimore. Columbia is expensive to live in, but the perks are worth it. I love it here. I rarely leave the area unless I have to.

I worked with the Federal Government at Fort Meade, until a year ago. Now I work part-time at the local library, which is in walking distance from my house. I also do some freelance computer work for a marketing research company in Towson, and my x-wife finds me occasional contract jobs at Hopkins. Just riding out the storm.
